Sodarstvo

Cooperage
(Suzana Vajngerl, Class Teacher 4. c)

Cooperage as an independent wooden art in our winegrowing areas and it has been very significant part in economy during the Roman times. Cooperage is known as an independent additional house making of wooden barrels, tubs, buckets and trays. The cooper is making them from oak, chestnut, clear, beech, spruce, pine or larch staves.

On 16th of March we visited Ivan Želj, who started with cooperage at age of eighteen. His father encouraged him because he had a wish to preserve this old art and continue it as a family tradition. Mr. Ivan introduced us his products, barrels. Pupils could try to make some barrels on their own. Mr Ivan showed pupils how a barrel for carrying the water is made. Staves are put together in hoop. At this you have to be very skilful and exact, that tubs don’t burst. When making the bursts the pupils could find out that it is quite demanding. Barrel without a bottom doesn’t hold the water, so he has to make it. After hour and a half, we returned to school with full of impressions and nice memories. We wish to thank to Mr. Želj for his educating presentation and original performance. Mr. Ivan’s wish is, that young people will decide and become enraptured for local art occupations. After finished presentation and not so easy work we made us fit with some juice and some candies. We also took photos of the products.
